Thank you Peter

Although I was born and raised
in Haiti, where I lived until 1961, I had never visited Ile-A-Vache or any
other islands adjacent to Haiti's mainland. However, a year ago, Peter
invited me to team up with him to go to Ile-A-Vache and start an artist
coorperative there. I wasn't ready to take up a new project yet, for I've
been supporting four orphanages and schools in Haiti and the bateys of the
Dominican Repulic; But after Peter explained to me how this new project
would help supporting local artists, as well as the elementary school of
the island, I joined him in his effort, and I began immediately to ship
art materials to get the project off the ground. We had the most
exiting time together, and met the most wonderful island hosts: Jean Willy
with his family who provided us with the most gracious services and
attention, treating us like family. We visited the school and the island
only public library and pledged our support to both.
Unfortunately, before we had a chance to travel again
Peter left us on the 8th of April 2008, while making plans
for a summer group trip to the island with New-York teachers. I've
collaborated with Peter on various works related to Haiti since 1990. He
was an inspiration and a catalyst for other American middle-class
intellectuals like himself to lend support and educate themselves about
Haitian culture. I missed him enormously and I vow to continue his work
to honor his
memory.
Sincerely yours
Pierre Leroy
