CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES:

High School Completion: Currently the two existing high schools in Ile-a-Vache do not provide students access to 12th grade which would allow them to complete high school by taking the national baccalaureate exam. Students have to leave the island and move to the mainland where their parents have to find a family member or rent a place for them to stay and be cared for the year.

Teachers, parents, and the mayor's office wish to setup a 12th grade class and give some 50 students the opportunity to remain on the island and complete high school. The budget to cover the cost of the teachers and materials is around $8000. Of course, the parents will contribute to their children education by paying a registration fee. EDEM wishes to find a partner willing to help raise $5,000. In the meantime, the mayor is looking for a permanent solution.

Food security: EDEM aims to achieve on the island a situation in which all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that both fits their taste and can support an healthy and active life.

To do so, we are setting up projects to support large scale plantations around the island in partnership with local farmers and land owners. We are currently growing plantain, a banana like fruit that is part of the daily diet of Haitian.

An investment of $2,000 will help setup a two acre of plantain. click here to contribute to the plantain lot.

Agro-Forestry: EDEM is exploring an ecologically viable strategy consisting of integrated farming built around agroforestry.. Trees and crops are interspersed on the same field developing into a natural forest that will help maintain the ecological health of the land.

The agroforestry system will include a broad variety of food crops such as peppers, pumpkin, beans, and other vegetables, herbs like basil and mint, and fruit such as mangos, lime, and papayas. The crop variety is source to a healthy diet and to additional income for the farmers.

Our initial lot will start on 3 acres of lemon trees which have been prepared in a well maintained nursery to resist the greening lime disease.

An investment of $2,000 will help setup a two acre citrus plantation. click here to invest in the lemon plantation.

Children Corner: Every first Saturday of the month, children in Ile-a-Vache will gather in 5 different communities for 3 hours of reading, singing, fun and lessons on civic, the environment and health.

Children are the future of this country and extracurricular activities such as these provide them an opportunity to express themselves and become more appreciative of their community. This program will be led by Miss Edveline Oxerre, member of the mayor's team who is also a kindergarten teacher with years of experience.

An investment of $2,000 will help us operate the program for the entire school year. click here to invest in the children of Ile-a-Vache.
